They will also be available throughout the day to answer any questions regarding their artwork or medium. All works on display are for sale and 50% of the proceeds will benefit HEARTS. About the Local Featured Artists for PortFest 2018
Lawrence Chapliwy Impressionist landscape artist, Lawrence Chrapliwy was born in South Bend, Indiana on May 13, 1947. He developed an early interest in art and nature, studying art throughout his school days, but is largely self-taught. His natural talent eventually gained him a career as an illustrator and graphic designer. The next phase of Lawrence's career was success in the advertising design field as an Art Director and Creative director. In 2007 Chrapliwy moved to Long Island with his wife, also an artist, and decided to pursue his passion for traditional oil painting. He has since developed a strong following of admirers and collectors, both locally and nationally. (see examples of his work below) Following a course of self-directed studies, Chrapliwy obtained his training through classes at the Art Student League of New York and workshops with top plein air painters Kevin Macpherson, Kenn Backhaus, Xiang Jie, Peggy Kroll Roberts and selected readings. He continues along this course still, to further improve his skills and stay abreast of current trends in art today. He has been teaching plein air painting privately for the last five years and continues to do so. In keeping with his personal discipline of daily painting, Lawrence joined the Central Park Plein Air Painters as an artist member and now, as an instructor. The Central Park Plein Air Painters meet in good weather weekly and choose various locations in Central Park to paint from. "Plein Air" paintings are works created while painting from life in the open air: the paintings require enormous discipline and skill to complete with ever changing light and weather conditions. Lawrence Chrapliwy is an associate member of The Oil Painters of America and The American Impressionist Society and currently teaches painting and drawing in Port Washington. Mike Selbach Selbach’s primary medium is wood. Selbach primarily works with carved and assembled wood relief sculptures. Woodcuts are a special case of very low relief. His woodcuts are strongly influenced by German Expressionist woodcuts, especially those of the Die Brucke group - Erich Heckel, Karl Schmidt-Rottluff, Fritz Bleyl, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Emil Nolde, Otto Mueller et al. Selbach lives and works in metro Port Washington. Barbara Stein The paintings of award-winning artist Barbara Stein have been featured in solo and group exhibitions in galleries and cultural centers, including the Heckscher Museum in Huntington, New York; the Office of the Manhattan Borough President in New York City; the Gallery of Elderfields in Manhasset, New York; the Petite Gallery, Huntington, New York; the Mill Pond House Gallery in Smithtown, New York; and the Graphic Eye Gallery in Port Washington, New York. Stein received a B.F.A. from Carnegie-Mellon University and an M.A. from New York University. Barbara Stein currently lives in the New York City area. |
