Lawrence Chrapliwy
Port Washington Award winning artist, Lawrence Chrapliwy, grew up in South Bend, Indiana. Living at the edge of the woods and St. Joseph River, he was always surrounded by nature. While largely self-taught, he studied with the OPA plein air painters Kevin McPherson, Matt Smith, Kenn Errol Bachaus and Master Artist Xiang Jie. Trained at the Art Students League under painter Henry Finklestein in NYC. His preferred style is a loose impressionistic application of paint. He works primarily in oil and exclusively from life. Now, living near the water, his love of painting the local boatyards, regattas and the landmarks of Port Washington are his inspiration. He has many resident collectors who commission local scenes to remind them of this beautiful area on Long Island. Ninety percent of his work is plein air and often uses his on the spot oil sketches to create larger landscape paintings. Lawrence also teaches plein air painting to adults and young artists. Recently he has started a Young Maritime Artist program at the Science Museum of Long Island. He is also President of the Manhasset Art Association with an exclusive membership of 125 artists. He is also an Associate member of the Oil Painters of America and The Society of Marine Artists. He has won many awards for his paintings both regionally and nationally. During PortFest 2014,Congressman Steve Israel purchased one of his plein air paintings of the Sands-Willets House for his office in Washington, D.C. Lawrence and his wife Lynne are Artists in Residence at the Historical Sands- Willets House which is the home of the Cow Neck Peninsula Historical Society. |

Michele Garfield
Port Washington People, life, moments in time, surroundings, light, shadow, color, shape and design all converge in one place: my canvas. I take photos of people moving through life and hone in on something that I want to capture in paint. Sometimes it’s the mood created by light and shadow. Sometimes it’s the relationship of people to the environment around them or the visual connection between people. Every interaction provides a subject to be interpreted. My passion for painting and appreciation for daily life allow me to fill the space of a blank canvas with color and life. |

Shelly Holtzman
Port Washington My love of art began in childhood and has stayed with me to this day. I received a BFA from The University of Michigan. After graduation, I returned to New York and began a 13-year career in advertising as an art director, and later, group creative director, senior vice president, for Brouillard Communications, a division of J. Walter Thompson. I left the corporate world to start a family and to once again, pursue the study of fine arts. Through the years I have studied art at The Art Students League, The New School and The School of Visual Arts in New York City; also at Stanford University, Syracuse University, The University of London and the Nassau County Museum of Art. My background in graphic design influences my style, which emphasizes strong outlines, bold shapes and rich hues. I’m drawn to the way color is reflected in light and shadow and try to intensify this relationship on the canvas while capturing the spirit of the moment. I am Co-President of The Art Guild of Port Washington, located at the Elderfields Preserve, 200 Port Washington Blvd and also a member of the Port Washington Library Art Advisory Council. While living on Long Island I have had two solo shows at Northwinds Coffee House in Port Washington, exhibited multiple times with The Art Guild at Elderfields and The Graphic Eye galleries and with the Huntington Arts Council. In 2010 I had a solo exhibit entitled Petals & Portraits at The Reconstructionist Synagogue in Plandome, NY. In 2011 I had a show called Mid-Winter Summer Solstice at North Shore LIJ Hospital in New Hyde Park, NY. Posters of my artwork still line the hospital’s waiting room. |

Marcos Sinconegui
Port Washington My work usually starts with found images or snap-shots that resonate with me because of the source, subject matter, graphic qualities, or an emotional connection. At times, I search for images that relate to a theme or a subject that I have in mind and always allowing the search take me to unexpected places. Once an image is chosen, I let the art making process take its course. I explore ways of creating works that combine traditional forms of art making and medium with commercial graphic techniques and materials, as well as technological tools used to create images. I manipulate the images using computer software which I then transfer to the surface of the works using layers of colors and lines. I am interested in the juxtaposition of very freely applied fields of color where everything is possible and there are no rules with the symmetry of monochrome lines or graphic shapes. I allow the process, materials and techniques I use to dictate the outcome. This combination of materials, techniques and technologies seeks to connect the symbols of culture, history and media that construct perceived reality, and the understanding by which our lives and shared existence is rendered legible. |
